SOLUTIONS:

In some special cases it is necessary to create the incoming/outgoing servers in the AVG Email Scanner manually. A typical example is when you are using secure communication ( SSL ). In this situation it is necessary to change theAVG E-mail Scanner configuration by following these steps:

  1. Open the AVG program.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Advanced settings.

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

  3. On the left pane expand Email Protection -> Email Scanner.

  4. Then left click Servers.

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

  5. Left click Add New Server button.

  6. Select POP3 or IMAP - Add new server, name the new server and edit its settings:
    • Type of login: Fixed host; fill in your POP3/IMAP server name (e.g. pop3.mymail.com for POP3 server and imap.mymail.com for IMAP server)
    • Select the type of port being used. This is the type of protocol your mail server communicates on, either POP3 or IMAP.

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

    • Left click OK button to close the window after desired input.

      Specifying Additional Server Settings:

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

      8. Type in the POP3 Server Name box, the name of the mail server being used.

      9. Type of login: Select Fixed host and enter the name of the mail server being used in the box.

      10. The port box will change to value 110.

      11. Specify the local port used by the connection.

      12. Specify in the Local port box 5300.

      13. Specify in the Connection drop-down "Secure to regular port" or "Secure to dedicated port"

    • Make sure that the server is activated.

    14. Next, select SMTP.

    15. Left click the Add new server button

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

    16. Name the new server by inputting a name into the box then proceed to edit the settings for the server.

Access the AVG options to setup an encrypted connection.

    17. Relay Host: Select Fixed host; fill in your SMTP server (e.g. smtp.mymail.com)

    18. Local port: Input value of 540 into the box.

    19. Connection: Select the option "Secure to regular port" or "Secure to dedicated port"

Make sure that the server is activated.

The AVG Email Scanner is now set up to communicate with your email server using SSL encryption. Now, configure your email client so that it connects to the AVG Email Scanner instead of the actual email server.

    The server configuration will be:

    POP3/IMAP
    • Server: 127.0.0.1
    • Port: 5300
    • Username / password: same as before (i.e. your email username and password)
    • Encryption: NONE ( SSL disabled)

    SMTP
    • Server: 127.0.0.1
    • Port: 5400
    • Authentication: same as before
    • Username / password: same as before (if required)
    • Encryption: NONE ( SSL disabled )

Congratulations! You now know how to setup an encrypted e-mail connection through AVG Internet Security and well on your way to avoid problems scanning new incoming e-mail messages.
