Troubleshooting Guide Of The Week:
PROBLEM:
There are a limited number of resources available for use by a computer system. The demands on those resources seem to be unlimited. As you add more hardware to a computer you will find that the potential for resource conflicts increases because each new hardware component needs to use specific resources to function properly in the computer. These components must also co-exist properly with other hardware components and as a result are often shared which can further complicate the troubleshooting procedure.
SOLUTION(s):

The following symptoms are critical areas that determine a resource conflict problem.

  • A device is transffering data inaccurately.
  • The computer system is locking up frequently.
  • The sound card is not sounding quite right.
  • The mouse is not working.
  • Garbage characters are appearing on the screen for no apparent reason.
  • The printer is outputting gibberish or unrecognized characters.
  • The floppy drive cannot format a floppy diskette.
  • The computer is starting in safe mode automatically.
  • The computer is not booting up properly.
  • The computer is restarting randomly.

This document Resolving Resource Conflicts provides an at-a-glance look at how to troubleshoot hardware components.
